What is a Hallmark?

In the UK, a hallmark is a series of marks applied to an item of precious metal by an independent, government-appointed Assay Office. This is a legal requirement to assure
customers that they are buying what is advertised. There are currently four offices in the UK - Edinburgh, London, Sheffield and Birmingham.
